Tell Someone: Recognising and Responding to Child Sexual Abuse Training Module

Tell Someone: Recognising and Responding to Child Sexual Abuse is an introductory training module designed to build awareness, understanding and confidence in recognising and responding to concerns about child sexual abuse and grooming.

The training supports adults to better notice signs of harm and know what to do next.

Who this training is for

This training is for adults who work, volunteer, or regularly interact with children and young people, including those involved in:

  • Government and non-government organisations
  • Community groups and clubs
  • Education, sporting, recreational or care-based settings

You do not need a specialist background or prior knowledge to complete this training.

What this training is (and is not)

What it is

  • An introductory learning module
  • A foundation to help you become more attuned to signs of harm and grooming
  • A starting point, with next steps and further learning resources provided at the end

What it is not

  • It is not exhaustive or all‑inclusive
  • It does not cover every form of harm or every context
  • It is not intended to provide highly nuanced or specialist guidance

Understanding and responding to child sexual abuse is complex. Every child or young person is unique, with their own experiences, needs and circumstances. This training cannot cover every possible situation, but it aims to strengthen your awareness and response overall.

As you work through the training, consider your own setting and the diverse backgrounds and experiences of the children and young people you work with or support.

If you’re concerned or unsure

If you have a specific concern about a child or young person, or even if you’re unsure, reach out for help.

This training is not a substitute for advice or support in specific circumstances.  If you need more specific advice or guidance, contact the Strong Families Safe Kids Advice and Referral Line.

Further learning and support

At the end of the training, you’ll find:

  • Additional reading and resources
  • Information about where to get further advice and support

These are recommended to deepen your understanding beyond this introductory module.

For organisations delivering this training

If you are sharing this training with staff or volunteers, consider:

  • How you will support participants before, during and after completing the module
  • Linking the training to your internal policies and procedures
  • Clarifying information‑sharing and confidentiality requirements within your context
  • Ensuring staff know where to access additional supports and escalation pathways

Providing context and organisational support helps make the training safer, more effective, and easier to apply in practice.
